There is a lot to love about this show; the cast are strong, and the onstage band who interact in the main diner setting is a fun touch.

Something Smells Funny | JimeoinHe’s the Irishman with an unmistakable grin and he’s been ‘being funny’ in Australia for as long as we can remember. This guy, of course, is Jimeoin, and his show in this years’ Melbourne Comedy Festival proves that despite a little balding, he’s still got it – there’s applause as soon as he steps onto the stage and it keeps going long after he’s left.

Jimeoin has been doing what he does best, otherwise known as stand-up, for many years, and in the most wonderful of ways it shows. He gives the impression of complete effortlessness, delivering his material with ease, and bluffing his way through any silences. His timing is also impeccable; he knows how to gauge the mood of his audience and subtly adjusts his own delivery in accordance with their response. In Jimeoin’s capable and trustworthy hands, all the audience need do is watch and listen. Laughing is then unavoidable.

Something Smells Funny is classic Jimeoin in its content as well as delivery. Its material is not particularly topical, political, or even important. Instead it is based on Jimeoin’s acute and humorous observations of the everyday. These, in combination with his miming skills, are perhaps best demonstrated in his impersonation of various birds, including a rather conceited swan and a landmine-wary hen. This Jimeoinesque style is evident even when he is at his cheekiest: in this instance, his deliberation of pubic hair rearrangement and collection.

A less common occurrence in Jimeoin’s shows is his singing and playing of the guitar. He does so, he says, to inject a bit of “colour and movement” and in this instance it certainly succeeds. More importantly however, the audience find that shortly after he utters his first couple of sentences of the show, and they have adjusted to his Irish mumble, they are simply sharing an evening with a familiar, likeable, and very funny friend.
